With a wide variety of products from local sellers as well as trusted brand partners, shoppers found all they needed on Shopee. Home & Living, Health & Beauty, and Groceries & Pets emerged as top categories sold during the 11.11 Big Sale’s peak day.

Meanwhile, local sellers also saw a boost in their sales, with over 3.2 times uplift in items sold by local sellers on 11 November compared to average day. Shopee Uplifts Influencer Community in Malaysia

Shopee, Malaysia’s leading e-commerce platform, continues to uplift the nation’s expanding influencer community to grow across Shopee’s various programmes with the recent Shopee Influencers Fest 11.11 Countdown Party. Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) were given the opportunity to build and strengthen their personal brand on Shopee via networking sessions with the influencer community and connecting with key brands.

Shopee’s latest influencer study highlighted the importance and relatability of the influencer community online to the Malaysian public, proving that Shopee content creators play an invaluable role in the online ecosystem. The e-commerce platform showed their appreciation for these KOLs with the Shopee Influencers Fest 11.11 Countdown Party, where almost 80 influencers celebrated their growth and achievements in 2022.

“We are thankful for all the influencers that have taken a leap of faith in joining our digital programmes and have grown with us. One of our long-term goals is to sustainably propel the influencer’s ecosystem in Malaysia by supporting them in building their brand and business. We are excited for the continued growth and possibilities to systematically connect our influencers with brands in the years ahead,” Huiyan Pan, Head of Brand Marketing at Shopee Malaysia said, during the Shopee Influencers Fest 11.11 Countdown Party.

During the event, KOLs were given the opportunity to network exclusively with brands present, build relationships with like-minded influencers in the community, and take part in fun and engaging activities with old and new friends.

“Being a Shopee content creator has helped me to grow my personal branding as an influencer and gain more trust among my followers over the past year. I enjoy being a part of this community as I can learn from other influencers on how to grow and improve myself. Joining the programme has also opened up more opportunities for me to collaborate with brands that I have dreamt of working with,” Eizuwan Eizuddin, Shopee Affiliate shared his experience on being a part of Shopee’s influencer community.

The Shopee Influencers Fest 11.11 Countdown Party also saw well-known Malaysians such as Zoey Rahman, Ceddy Ang, and Tatty Hassan celebrating this night with other influencers present. These KOLs enjoyed a night of creating content for their followers, with live music, a mind-blowing magic show and interactive photo corner.

Shopee Celebrity Squad member and popular influencer Ceddy Ang expressed, “I’m very happy to be a part of Shopee’s community, where I can get to know new creators at events that do different things than me. I have also decided to launch my brand on Shopee as I believe in Shopee’s plans and support for budding entrepreneurs such as myself. The good working relationship I have with Shopee has introduced me to a bigger network of KOLs, who have shown nothing but unwavering support for me and my brand.”

Shopee also has various programmes to uplift their KOLs such as Shopee Masterclass, where creators have knowledge-sharing sessions, and Shopee House, a bi-monthly get together to share, connect, and get to know each other. Above all, Shopee also ensures that nano and micro influencers affiliated with the platform are armed with the necessary skills to create innovative and relevant content.

Winning Malaysian Loyalty on E-Commerce

Shopee reveals what drives Malaysian consumer loyalty to their favourite brands online in its October 2022 study ‘Winning Malaysian Loyalty on E-Commerce’*. For official brands with storefronts on Shopee Mall, repeat purchases are driven by value-added services and guarantees. 87% of Malaysians surveyed prefer Shopee Mall official brands due to 100% guaranteed authentic products, hassle-free returns, and free shipping. The remaining 13% feel rewarded by exclusive product launches and Shopee Brand Memberships.

For all other sellers across the platform, 5 in 10 shoppers repeatedly return to their favourite stores for more than 4 years due to in-app personalization and engaging recommendations. These respondents equated personalised engagements with: 25% loved product recommendations and bundles that fit their needs, 14% trusted in safe and secure packaging, 8% timely chat responses, and 4% personal gift surprises. On the other hand, 49% preferred being rewarded with vouchers and discounts over personalisation.

Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia said, “It’s encouraging for brands to know that Malaysian consumers are very discerning online and will be loyal to brands that can be trusted. When faced with two similar sellers, 6 in 10 customers still choose official Shopee Mall brands because Shopee ensures users receive twice their money back if the products purchased on Shopee Mall are not authentic. Shopee Mall is trusted by over 4,500 partner brands in Malaysia and many of whom are integrating their offerings and campaigns with us to better serve their customers.”

“We are pleased to see many sellers driving more engagement with higher levels of customer service, winning customer loyalty as a result. We aim to innovate new in-app features that will provide extra added value for all users and a better buying-and-selling experience on Shopee,” Soh added.

When not shopping online, survey respondents indicate that the primary driver of continued in-app engagement is discovering new interests on the platform; 42% surveyed enjoy exploring new products and trends. 36% play games, 14% participate in lucky draws. The remainder watch Shopee Live for entertainment or make donations to their favourite NGOs.

According to the study, Malaysian shoppers do not only purchase the things they need and love from brands they are loyal to, they want to be entertained, connect with others, be inspired, and do so with an ease of mind. It is no surprise therefore that 60% of long-time sellers on the platform (over 5 years) build positive relationships with customers on Shopee through a combination of timely seller support features, market-researched offerings and affiliate networks. For example, 14% use Shopee Chat to cultivate and nurture deeper, more trusting relationships. Since 2019, Shopee Live has also seen sellers launch streams to demonstrate products, answer buyer questions, and get real-time feedback from shoppers.

‘Winning Malaysian Loyalty on E-Commerce’ is part of Shopee’s thought leadership series of year-end consumer and seller trends during big e-commerce campaigns. These data-driven insights allow business owners and brands to retain and reward loyal shoppers online.

Shopee Celebrates the Heart of Malaysia on E-Commerce

60% of Malaysian consumers are proactively supporting local sellers with #ShopeeSapotLokal, at the live reveal of the platform’s largest marketplace study this year, Celebrating the Heart of Malaysia on E-Commerce*, in conjunction with the company’s 9.9 Super Shopping Day.

When 3,356 consumers were asked “Why do you think it is important to support local sellers?” between 19 July to 17 August 2022, 30% endorsed the quality of Made-in-Malaysia goods that cater to their local preferences, 20% stated that they want to keep the economy running for patriotic reasons and 8% were sellers supporting other local sellers in the same boat. 42% preferred shopping local to get their items delivered faster.

Among these respondents, half of them (54%) are working full time, 18% are in-between jobs, 17% are senior citizens, 6% are stay-at-home parents and 5% are university students.

Shopee also examined what Malaysians valued about online shopping. Over 70% of consumers surveyed estimated that their everyday online shopping transactions resulted in savings of over 5% consistently.

“Interestingly, not all buyers prioritise discounts and vouchers exclusively. Seven in 10 Malaysians value peace of mind over lower price,” according to Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia.

Nine in 10 Malaysians still buy online despite the reopening of physical outlets because it is a learned and adopted habit. The majority value having ‘peace of mind’, with 40% enjoying the convenience of parcels delivered to their doorstep, 17% feeling safe with Shopee Guarantee, and 10% trusting reviews and pictures from other buyers.

For 49% of buyers, Shopee is the top-of-mind shopping destination for lifestyle products, including home decoration items, fashion pieces, and health and beauty products. Apart from that, 24% of buyers purchase living essentials (groceries and diapers) from Shopee, 16% look for tech devices (computers, mobile devices and TV) and the remaining 11% buy automobile parts or work and school supplies.

“When Malaysian consumers express their values through online shopping preferences this way, we truly understand why eight in 10 local sellers started their selling journey online with Shopee. We are humbled to discover that half of our local sellers surveyed say the income earned on our platform is crucial as it enables them to support their families,” said Soh.

The majority of local sellers began selling online with Shopee to overcome existing limitations on their earnings and participation in the economy: 24% because it is their only source of income,  5% can’t get a job, 18% need to supplement income and 24% feel the pressures of higher costs of living. 30% said they became Shopee sellers because of their passion for their business.

Over 9,000 Malaysians Raise Funds for Environmental Sustainability with #ShopeeGivesBack

#ShopeeGivesBack, Shopee’s long-term community initiative, has raised over RM48,000 from 1 May 2020 to 31 July 2022 for two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) championing environmentally-conscious efforts in Malaysia. Over two years, WWF-Malaysia and Zero Waste Malaysia received donations from over 9,000 donors, including over 5,500 first time donors.

85% of the funds raised went to assisting WWF-Malaysia, a national conservation trust with more than 90 ongoing projects nationwide. Funds raised are used to safeguard some of Malaysia’s most iconic wildlife – including the Malayan tiger, Bornean elephants, Bornean orangutans and sea turtles – from threats such as poaching and habitat loss. WWF-Malaysia continues to address environmental issues to spread awareness, support education and research, and conserve the local landscape flora and fauna, water, soils, and other natural resources.

Across the two years, Zero Waste Malaysia received 15% of their total donations through #ShopeeGivesBack, supporting them in their efforts to go further in achieving their mission of building a waste-free and sustainable future for the nation. Zero Waste Malaysia advocates for sustainable development and aims to increase the local community’s awareness of sustainable living through education, resources, public engagement, and on-ground initiatives. In 2021 alone, Zero Waste Malaysia received 13% of their total donations through #ShopeeGivesBack.

Huiyan Pan, Head of Brand Marketing at Shopee Malaysia said, “Shopee is moved by the reception of the community in supporting the efforts of our NGO partners in contributing towards environmental change. We firmly believe that with greater awareness and support from shoppers on our marketplace, we can strike a balance towards building a long-term, sustainable future for the environment and the economy.”

“Shopee appreciates being able to play a part in WWF-Malaysia’s conservation efforts and is thrilled to hear about the efforts that have reduced 90% of snare encounters for the Malayan tiger. In 2020 and 2021, more fresh sightings of the tigers, including a mother and three cubs, were discovered in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex,” Pan continued.

During Ramadan in 2021 and 2022, these two NGOs saw a collective month-on-month increase in donations of 85% and 113% respectively, from March to April compared to other months through #ShopeeGivesBack. Of the 1,400 donations received, WWF-Malaysia and Zero Waste Malaysia saw 1,000 first time donors donating during a time where generous Malaysians were giving back to communities and causes close to their hearts and values.

“The majority of our donations come from the public, hence the #ShopeeGivesBack platform has helped us reach wider audiences to raise the much needed public support that ensures the continuity of WWF-Malaysia’s vital conservation projects. WWF-Malaysia is also taking action to promote sustainable lifestyles and increase resilience to climate change through policy advocacy and conserving natural ecosystems,” said Helina Yow, Director of Partnerships, WWF-Malaysia.

#ShopeeGivesBack was launched on 1 May 2020 to help the underserved communities in Malaysia across four areas: underprivileged communities development, children and family services, health charities, and environmental charities. The platform provides Malaysians with an online avenue to support their favourite causes in the most convenient way. Shopee ensures that these NGOs have credible track records and are registered with the Registry of Societies.
